Accelerating the Localization of RF Chips: A Growing Industry Ecosystem
Yvette Wu October 3, 2025
The demand for RF chips in the mobile phone and electronics industries is accelerating as domestic manufacturers strengthen their presence. With new startups emerging and existing companies like Zhuoshengwei and Magetech already listed, the ecosystem for RF chips in China is rapidly growing.
Domestic RF Chip Growth and Market Share
Despite the increasing number of Chinese RF chip manufacturers, their market share remains low compared to international leaders. According to Yole, filters, which account for 53% of the RF front-end market value, are a critical area where Chinese companies are working to catch up. Currently, top international manufacturers like Murata, Qualcomm, and Skyworks dominate this segment.
However, domestic RF chip manufacturers have been making significant strides in power amplifiers and switches, which account for 33% and 7% of the market, respectively. The key challenge remains developing competitive filters, especially as demand rises with the growth of 5G technologies.
Market Dynamics: Filters and Their Role in RF Chips
Filters are essential components in RF chips, helping manage both transmission and reception of signals. As the communications industry evolves, especially with the shift to 5G, the demand for filters is increasing. The number of filters required in mobile phones, for example, has grown significantly—from 40 in high-end 4G phones to over 70 in early 5G models.
The RF chip filter market is projected to grow rapidly, from $8 billion to $22.5 billion between 2017 and 2023, driven by advancements in communication technology. This presents a crucial opportunity for domestic manufacturers to increase their market share, especially in the high-frequency applications that BAW filters serve, currently dominated by American manufacturers like Avago and Qorvo.
Domestic RF Ecosystem and Industry Synergy
The push for domestic RF chips is gaining momentum, with major device manufacturers, industry investors, and startups collaborating to enhance capabilities. Companies like Haoda Electronics are benefiting from strategic investments and support, with strong partnerships from Xiaomi and Huawei, further driving domestic RF chip production.
Increased collaboration within the domestic industry is accelerating technological advancements, helping Chinese manufacturers close the gap with global leaders. This ecosystem is primed for growth, and in the next few years, cross-competition and consolidation are expected to further enhance the capabilities of domestic RF chip manufacturers.
Conclusion: The Future of Domestic RF Chips
As the domestic RF chip market evolves, there is strong potential for significant breakthroughs in both technology and production capacity. The growing synergy between manufacturers and investors, along with the shift to 5G and the increasing complexity of RF chips, positions China’s RF chip industry for rapid expansion. Within a few years, Chinese manufacturers are expected to catch up to their overseas counterparts, contributing to a more competitive and innovative global RF chip market.
